The way you do it is to stack the panels, sliding each edge back the length of the scarf. The you find a way to remove all of the material that keeps it from being a smooth line. I used a hand plane, because I only have to scarf 4 panels and it wasn't worth buying a power tool or jig.
It took several hours with a low angle block plane, mostly because the low angle on it had it skipping across the glue lines on a couple of the panels. Considering I've never really used a hand plane before I'm learning it all as I go. I did stop to sharpen the plane a couple of times, and I can get it sharp enough to poorly shave arm hairs, which I suspect is sufficient.
The glue lines make it easy to check that the bevel is consistent.I did a pretty good job based on appearances. We'll see how it glues up.

| It's not perfect, but it's good enough to work. Just fine for a first effort. |
